Discover how intentional stillness resets your biology, restores hormones, and sharpens clarity.
A moment with Kat,
When was the last time you actually sat with quiet for more than five minutes? I wonder if the thought of it feels like a luxury to you. If I were to talk with the version of me from ten years ago, “luxury” is the last word I would have used to describe how I felt about quiet.
For me, quiet was an invitation—one that opened the door for every insecure, mean, abusive thought I’d been holding to walk directly into my peace. Imagine being a woman who has suffered multiple miscarriages, standing alone in her home while getting ready to leave. The music is off, the television is silent, and the only sound is the footsteps across the slate floor. As she turns to walk out the front door, she catches her reflection. In that split second, the loudest, clearest voice bursts through the quiet and yells:
“You never deserved to be a mother in the first place.”
That was my experience of quiet for decades. And through my work—and through vulnerable conversations with others—I’ve learned I’m not alone. The good news? The version of me today describes quiet as a delicious stretch of time that nourishes my soul.
Quiet is not new. It is not trendy. And it turns out, quiet is not just a mindset—it’s part of our biology. We all have a deep, ancient operating system baked into our design; we just need to learn how to access it again.
In Season 2, Episode 1 of the Full Color Wellness Podcast, Dr. Cynthia and I reframed quiet to be less like an awkward dinner guest and more like something the body is begging for. Science agrees: stillness is one of the fastest ways to restore balance, reset stress hormones, sharpen emotional clarity, and strengthen your physical health.
Let’s dig into why.
Stillness Was a Survival Strategy Long Before It Became a Wellness Tool
Picture early humans—cave-dwelling, survival-driven humans. They rested, not because they were being mindful or spiritual, but because stillness kept them alive.
They rested when they were sick, after escaping danger, and after hunting the giant animals that fed their families. They listened to their bodies because they had no other choice. It was primal wisdom at work: the body needed recovery time, and they honored it.
When they rested, their bodies dropped into what we now call the parasympathetic nervous system, the biological “repair mode” that rebuilds energy, repairs tissue, and rebalances hormones. I always picture that scene in Interview with a Vampire when Claudia transforms in a matter of seconds.
We are still wired for this cycle of intensity and recovery. But modern life only gives us the intensity, never the recovery. And our bodies know it. Our hormones know it. Our nervous systems definitely know it.
All this is to champion the idea that quiet and rest is not laziness it’s medicine and it’s time to take some.
The Nervous System: Stillness Re-Engages the Parasympathetic Repair Mode
When we’re stressed, we activate the sympathetic nervous system: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. Heart rate spikes. Pupils dilate. Muscles tighten. Digestion shuts down. It’s incredible—and exhausting.
We weren’t designed to live there.
Stillness flips the switch back to the parasympathetic nervous system by:
- Activating the vagus nerve– lowers stress hormones, slows heart rate, improves digestion
- Reducing cortisol – stabilizes inflammation, mood, and hormonal cascades
- Increasing heart rate variability – boosts resilience
- Strengthening immune function – improves B-cell and T-cell response
- Re-activating the prefrontal cortex – restores clarity, focus, and grounded decision-making
In other words:
Your body knows how to heal. Stillness simply gives it the space to do it.
Hormones: Quiet Reduces Overdrive Chemistry and Restores Balance
Here’s what surprised me the most when researching this topic: quiet directly influences hormone regulation. The biology tracks perfectly with what I’ve experienced—quiet brings clarity, emotional steadiness, and a more grounded way of moving through the day.
Stillness regulates the entire endocrine system, especially:
Cortisol
High when you hustle, low when you’re still.
Long-term elevation contributes to fatigue, weight shifts, irritability, sleep disruption, and hormone imbalance.
Stillness drops cortisol levels within minutes, repeatedly shown in clinical studies on meditation, breathwork, and grounding practices.
Adrenaline & Noradrenaline
These keep you in “go mode.” Stillness signals that the threat is over and the body can reset.
Estrogen, Progesterone & Testosterone
The reproductive system is the first to downregulate under stress. Stillness indirectly improves balance by calming the HPA axis (the stress-response command center).
Insulin & Blood Sugar
Quiet reduces the metabolic “fight-or-flight” spike and helps restore steadier blood sugar, a key to mood stability and long-term health.
Brain Function: Stillness Strengthens the Inner Compass
I’ve learned over time that bringing science into a conversation that starts off with “Did you know quiet is a superpower” can really strengthen my argument. For the science affcionados out there I share these key findings from brain imaging studies.
- Stillness activates the Default Mode Network, responsible for introspection, identity, meaning, and emotional processing.
- It increases alpha brain waves, supporting creativity and calm focus.
- It strengthens the prefrontal cortex, your “inner leader.”
- It reduces activity in the amygdala, your fear center.
Many people initially resist quiet because they aren’t used to DMN activation. The discomfort is not a flaw, it’s physiology.
What Stillness Reveals (Biologically + Emotionally + Spiritually)
What actually happens when are able to embrace quiet and allow our body to shift into stillness? Some pretty cool things rise to the surface:
Hidden Fatigue
The moment you stop, your body finally tells the truth about how tired you are.
Emotional Backlog
Without noise, your emotional inbox opens.
(Pro tip: get curious, not judgmental.)
Internal Signals
Pain, tension, imbalance become noticeable—not because they’re new, but because you’re finally quiet enough to hear them.
Insight & Creativity
As stress circuits turn off, clarity turns on.
Body-Mind Reconciliation
Stillness shows you where you’ve been overriding your own needs.
This is where boundary-setting, energy budgeting, emotional processing, and long-term resilience begin.
One last thought
Quiet isn’t the absence of life, it isn’t empty, it’s honest.
Supercharged Challenge
This week, I want you to practice quiet on purpose, not as a pause between tasks, not as an afterthought, but as a biological reset your body has earned. A real intentional true moment of quiet. Think of quiet as a space where you life can speak up, give yourself just these 5 minutes and you’ll find your biology will take care of the rest.
Here’s your challenge:
1. Choose a 5-minute window each day for intentional stillness.
Morning, lunch break, before bed—pick a consistent time that you can commit to. Try attaching it to something you already do. In that 5 minutes all you have to do is….Sit, breathe, and let your nervous system shift out of “go mode.”
2. Notice what rises without judging it.
Is it exhaustion? Emotion? Clarity? Creativity?
Whatever comes up is simply information—your biology speaking.
3. After the 5 minutes – write down one thing your body told you.
A message, a feeling, a truth you heard within the quiet. This is how we begin reconnecting to the “inner compass” we talked about in Season 2, Episode 1.
4. End each session with a grounding question:
“What does my body need more of, and what does it need less of?” Let the answer shape one small choice you make that day.
