Trick to Treat: Why Time is the Full Sized Candy Bar

There are many dualities in October—trick or treat, cold mornings merging into hot afternoons, and my favorite, vibrant colors on dying leaves. It’s a month that makes you reflect—on what’s ending, what’s beginning, and what’s worth holding onto.

I’ve been doing that today, thinking about the duality of my life a year ago versus now. In October 2024, I was a month into the transition from a life leading corporate compliance into figuring out what the next chapter of my life would be. And as we enter week four of a government shutdown, it feels especially relevant to talk about money, meaning, and the real cost of energy.

The Trick of Money

I remember this time of year in my corporate life as one long stress marathon. Budget season meant spreadsheets, negotiations, and that annual push to “make it all work.” I’d fight for every last penny, protect pay, and try to distribute bonuses fairly. I truly thought I was taking care of people.

But here’s the truth—it was more trick than treat.

If I’d really wanted to care for my team, I would’ve focused more on nourishment, not numbers. Because what we all needed back then wasn’t another bonus or late-night spreadsheet win—it was space to breathe, time to recharge, and the kind of connection that doesn’t come with a performance review attached.

When you live in constant stress about money, it doesn’t just drain your bank account—it drains your Qi, your life force. And once your energy’s depleted, you can’t show up as your best self—for work or for life.

The Treat of Time

Back then, I used to think the “reward” for hard work was more work—more approval, more recognition, more… stuff.
But these days, I see the treat differently.

Time is the full-sized candy bar of life.
You know the one—what every kid hoped to find in their Halloween stash.

It’s rare, valuable, and you can’t trade for it. You savor it.

And like a full-sized candy bar, time nourishes you when you actually take it in—slowly, intentionally. Meanwhile, chasing money, status, or constant output is like filling up on bite-sized sugar hits: fast satisfaction, no real sustenance.

That realization changed everything for me. I stopped measuring my success in dollars and started measuring it in daylight—how many mornings I could take a walk before logging in, how many evenings I spent cooking something I actually enjoyed.

That’s when life started to feel… full-sized again.

The Science of Stress and the Energy of Awareness

Dr. Joe Dispenza writes in Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself that the more we live in stress, the more we shift from creation to survival. Our focus narrows to the physical world—our bills, our to-do lists, our problems. In that state, everything becomes about doing instead of being.

This is everyone’s default wiring, but awareness is the first step to rewriting it. When you notice yourself spinning in that cycle, it’s not a failure—it’s just feedback. Your body’s saying, “Hey, maybe it’s time for a real treat.”

Protecting your energy isn’t just about rest—it’s about reclaiming your awareness.

Energy Protection Is Energy Direction

In Qigong, we say where the mind goes, the Qi follows.

If your attention is constantly pulled toward scarcity and obligation, that’s where your energy will flow. But when you pause, breathe, and focus on gratitude or creation, your energy naturally redirects toward renewal.

This autumn, as nature shows us the beauty of letting go, try doing the same. Protect your energy by honoring your limits, savoring small joys, and remembering that what truly nourishes you is never found in your inbox or bank account—it’s in your presence.

Your Supercharged Seasonal Takeaways

  • Take the Treat, Skip the Trick: Give yourself permission to rest without guilt. The real productivity comes after the recharge. (It’s not laziness—it’s medicine.)
  • Refocus Your Qi: Each morning, take three slow, deep breaths. As you exhale, imagine releasing the weight of worry and returning to the present moment.
  • Eat with the Earth: Choose grounding autumn foods—sweet potatoes, figs, apples, squash, and sesame—to support your body’s natural energy flow.
  • Nourish, Don’t Numb: Before you reach for that quick fix—whether it’s sugar, scrolling, or spending—pause and ask: will this fill me or just distract me?
