A slow winter walk can restore energy, deepen clarity, and build inner resilience
Walking Into Winter Wisdom: Finding Resilience in the Quiet
Walking in a pine forest amidst the snow and the soft pink backdrop of a Utah canyon is how I spent the day after Thanksgiving. If you’ve been reading along, you know that winter is the time to nourish your quiet one—to chill out, get still, listen, and reflect.
I took a dose of that medicine today and was amazed that a slow-paced, low-mileage walk with only a minor altitude change still managed to leave me feeling satiated all the way into my bones.
You know that feeling you get after a hard day of work or an intense workout—the one that makes you feel like you truly put in some effort? That’s exactly how I feel right now as I write this. And after years of studying Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine, I understand why.
Why It Matters
Getting into that quiet space requires deep, intentional breathing and the release of the tension we hold in our bodies every single day. When you settle into that relaxed state, you open the channels for energy to move and restore you.
The pine forest, especially one like today’s, with trees over 1,000 years old, was absolutely humming with energy. I intentionally paused to look at these beautiful symbols of resiliency: living in harsh conditions at 8,000 feet with almost no water or nourishing soil and yet still thriving.
My body drank it in. I could feel the connection to that deep, ancient presence.
As I prepare to journey home, back to a life where responsibility weighs on me, where others ask things of me, where I must continually find my own way to thrive, I know I’m returning with the resilient energy I gathered on this simple, slow walk in the woods.
