Seasonal Reset: Qigong practices for fall wellness

Seasonal Reset: Using Qigong to Transition into Fall

Transitions can feel intimidating, but easing into fall has always been one of my favorite seasonal shifts. It’s September, and I know autumn is here when I wake to crisp morning air, my eyes start craving the changing leaves, and the cherry on top? The Great British Baking Show drops its newest season. My body also reminds me that my environment is changing and needs time to prepare—whether or not I feel ready.

In the past, this time of year almost guaranteed a lingering cold or seasonal flu. I’d stock up on OTC meds, grind through work with the occasional nap, and spend evenings in a medicine-induced fog. Sound familiar? Many of you—especially parents with kids back in school—might know this cycle all too well. As someone living with an autoimmune disease, I used to accept this as “normal.” But once I began my holistic health journey, studying Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I learned how to align with the seasons instead of fighting them. Now, instead of getting sick, I get stronger by nourishing and rebalancing my body to step into each season as a healthier, happier version of myself.

Why Over-the-Counter Remedies Fell Short

As I swapped out quick OTC fixes for whole foods, vitamins, hydration, and Qigong, I noticed something: most OTC remedies don’t actually help us get better—they just make us feel better. They mask symptoms and sometimes allow us to rest, but that’s only part of the healing formula. By choosing whole foods, proper hydration, steaming, and vitamin support, we fuel our body’s natural ability to heal instead of suppressing its signals.

·       Whole food nutrition provides antioxidants, phytonutrients, and vitamins that power up the immune system. Think of vitamin D as an immune “modulator” and vitamin B as energy support so your body has the fuel to repair.

·       Hydration and steaming thin mucus, clear irritants from the respiratory tract, and reduce sinus inflammation—unlike OTC decongestants, which dry out mucus and slow down clearance.

·       The “light bulb” moment for me was realizing: When you nourish and hydrate, you give your body the tools it needs to heal faster.

Qigong, TCM, and Seasonal Reset

What if I told you that through Qigong and TCM you can not only support your body in healing, but also strengthen your ability to adapt to seasonal transitions? That’s been my personal experience. I use seasonal resets throughout the year to embrace transitions and elevate my overall health.

According to TCM, our bodies and the environment are in constant dialogue. Each season has unique cues, and when we align our habits accordingly, we thrive. Ignore them, and stress, fatigue, or imbalance often follow.

Seasonal Cues of Fall in TCM

1.     Element – Metal

o   Symbolizes structure, clarity, and letting go—like trees shedding leaves.

2.     Organs – Lungs & Large Intestine

o   Lungs govern breath, immunity, and protective Qi.

o   The Large Intestine helps eliminate waste, physically and emotionally.

o   Imbalances show up as respiratory issues, constipation, or dry skin.

3.     Emotion – Grief (and its Virtue, Acceptance)

o   Fall surfaces grief as we release. When balanced, grief transforms into acceptance and inspiration.

4.     Climate – Dryness

o   Fall’s dryness affects lungs, throat, skin, and digestion—leading to coughs, chapped lips, or rough skin.

5.     Sense Organ – Nose & Skin

o   The lungs open to the nose. Seasonal allergies, skin dryness, or eczema are common signs of imbalance.

6.     Color – White

o   Foods like pears, daikon, cauliflower, garlic, and onion support lung and intestinal health.

7.     Flavor – Pungent/Acrid

o   Onions, ginger, and mustard greens disperse Lung Qi and ward off pathogens, but balance is key.

8.     Seasonal Energy – Gathering & Conserving

o   Summer’s expansive Yang gives way to the inward Yin of Fall, inviting reflection, rest, and preparation for winter.

Supercharged Seasonal Micro-Shifts

1.     Nourish with the Harvest

o   Focus on autumn foods with immune-boosting properties—squash, apples, pears, and root vegetables.

2.     Align Your Breath with the Season

o   Practice deep breathing or Qigong flows that expand the lungs, open the chest, and ground your energy.

3.     Create Space to Let Go

o   Release an old habit, thought, or item to invite new energy and balance emotions.

4.     Tune Into Your Environment

o   Update your skincare routine, cozy your home, and create grounding spaces that reflect fall’s energy.

5.     Match Seasonal Energy

o   Adjust routines to avoid overexertion, honor shorter days, and embrace reflection and intention-setting.

Reflection & Integration

Fall is an invitation to slow down, nourish the lungs, and live in harmony with the season’s energy. When you keep your shifts small and realistic, you set the stage for sustainable transformation.

Seasonal Reflection Prompt:
What am I ready to release this season so I can enter winter with clarity and lightness?
