Discover how shifting your perspective, practicing Qigong, and using simple daily tools can supercharge your health
This past weekend, I found myself reading a set of studies from the early 2000s. I know, I’m a nerd—reading studies on the weekend!
One in particular stood out. Published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 2002, it examined arthroscopic surgery for degenerative knee conditions. Patients were divided into two groups: one received the actual procedure, while the “placebo” group underwent everything except the surgery itself—incisions were made, anesthesia was given, but no repair was performed.
The result? Both groups reported the same level of relief.
A decade ago, I would have thought this was revolutionary. But now, I know better. I’ve learned the power of perspective. The placebo group’s expectation—their perspective—was that the treatment would work, so it did.
The Mind-Body Connection
Every time I think about this, I’m struck by how powerful the mind truly is. I often say, the body follows the mind—but I also know from personal experience how messy the mind can get.
I live with an autoimmune condition, MCAS, and every quarter I check in with my lab results. Without fail, when I’ve let life get chaotic, those results reflect it. Thankfully, perspective gives me a way back. It steadies me, helps me reclaim the wheel, and keeps me moving forward.
The Magic of Feeling Good
When I think about what it takes to feel good—healthy, strong, and aligned—I realize it doesn’t take much. The magic of feeling good isn’t in an object, an event, or even that chocolate chip cookie.
It’s in a thought.
It’s in how we perceive life.
The memory of Grandma making that cookie is what sparks that feel-good shift in the body. When we shift our perspective, we unlock goodness at our core. And when we feel that goodness, we feel alive, healthy, and sustainable.
My First Lesson in Perspective
I first learned this lesson in my twenties through a book called Fish!. It was my introduction to the power of perspective.
The authors suggest that each day we wake up with a choice: to bring awareness to our attitude and consciously direct it, moment by moment.
That shift—choosing how I show up instead of simply reacting—gave me freedom. It taught me that perspective is not passive. It’s active, empowering, and always available.
Qigong: My Anchor for Perspective
Qigong has become the tool I lean on most to stay aware of my emotions as they arise. The beginning of my practice always includes a moment to connect with my body, my breath, and my emotions.
As I work through my flows, I release what no longer benefits me. Those quiet minutes of paying attention have built a kind of muscle memory, allowing me to tap into mindfulness when I need it most.
I don’t get it right every day—but choosing my attitude, being aware of my perspective, and using its power helps me show up for life the way I want to—Full Color.
Supercharged Takeaways
Embodied Perspective
Use your body to help shift your mind. A slow, deep breath or gentle Qigong movement can signal safety and calm, allowing you to choose a lighter perspective.
Choose Your Attitude
At the start of each day, set an intention for how you want to show up: curious, calm, lighthearted. Revisit that choice throughout the day.
Micro-Moments of Awe
Step outside. Look at the sky. Notice a detail in nature. These tiny pauses remind us we are part of something bigger—and beautiful.
Pause + Reframe
Daoism teaches that everything is connected. Pausing before reacting, seeking clarity, and reframing allows for deeper connection and better outcomes.
Daily Gratitude Shift
Gratitude tracks your growth. Write down one challenge and one thing you’re grateful for. Over time, this builds a record of resilience.
